Catholics say we are born to original sin, and books like Richard Dawkins’ The Selfish Gene and Howard Bloom’s The Lucifer Principle propose our evolution has taken place out of self-interest. But recent studies show that our capacity for compassion and kindness is also hard-wired. Two scientists at Princeton University found that when people are shown images of harm being done to others, or parents shown photos of their children, the same part of the brain is activated. It would seem, whether Catholic guilt or Buddhist compassion, each end of the emotional spectrum has a cerebral correlation.
