The Sangha: A Creative Journey (Art), New Delhi

Shakti Maira’s solo exhibition of is centred on the Sangha, a group of 12 life-sized bronze sculptures, and also brings together some of the work done by the artist and sculptor over the past 20 years. These include drawings, prints, paintings, screens, maquettes and sculptures, in stoneware, plaster and bronze, which were part of the creative journey that led to the Sangha. The Sangha group pivots around a pair of joint figures, the arrangement hinging on the supposed moment when a word spoken by one figure reaches the ear of the other. Over the years, this idea has been expressed in a variety of mediums, starting with painting and branching into sculpture, printmaking, and a diversity of forms and materials that explores the boundaries between painting and sculpture, and between two and three dimensionality in art making.
