The questions related to farmers’ suicides in India have found a new platform in a debut solo exhibition by New York-based artist Kiran Chandra. Titled Pro.ject 2012.01, the exhibition converts a gallery space into a farmer’s domain at the Shrine Empire Gallery. The one-piece installation will comprise video, fabric, screen prints, soil, sculpture and charcoal drawing on paper. The gallery will be wrapped in a fabric that has been printed with audio file images of conversations Chandra has had with farmers and their families in Chattisgarh in the summer of 2011. The rise and fall of their voices visualised and printed onto cotton fabric mimic paddy fields, which the farmers wait to irrigate—waiting because the dammed river is being channelled to help feed the industries in the cities.
