Xiamen Bay |
In an apparent plan to Xerox the world, China is planning to recreate Salvador Dali’s beloved port of Cadaqués, Spain in a hyperdevelopment in Xianen Bay. Designers hired by the mega-developers, China Merchants Zhangzhou, have made a reconnaissance mission to the Spanish town, 10,500 kilometres away, photographing it extensively and measuring it with theodolites. The 40-hectare Chinese version of Cadaqués won’t quite be a replica; it might be a bit Daliesque, in fact. While the mayor of Cadaqués is said to be pleased by the flattery, there might be little reason to preen with self-congratulation: China does it because it can. Chinese developers have already created miniatures of Paris, Dorchester and a 15-million-dollar copy of Michael Jackson’s Neverland ranch.
