Before an amateur photographer posted pictures of Cheng Guorong, 34, on the Net, the homeless man spent his days grubbing around in the eastern Chinese city of Ningbo for food and cigarette butts. In the photos, his ensemble was a tatty sheepskin-lined coat over a faux leather jacket and streamers of bright fabric for a belt—all items liberated from dumpsters. But his unintended couture suddenly made him the toast of China, and then Milan. His new fans began calling him ‘Xi Li Ge,’ or ‘Brother Sharp.’ A fashion analyst enthused: “Western rough lines come with Japanese delicacy…hair features Japan’s hottest cowboy style…he is [a] down-to-earth mix-and-match expert; from the perspective of colour matching, his belt is surely a highlight...which could only be understood by those who devote themselves to fashion.” And now a Chinese film on the most famous bum on the planet is set for a September release.
