Translated from Hindi by Madhu Singh
In September 1970, 20-year-old Ramchandra Singh, who later joined the Communist Party of India, entered the Hardoi District Jail in Uttar Pradesh as a Naxalite undertrial. He later received a life sentence. Despite the odds being stacked against him, Singh used his sense of humour, empathy and gift for writing to survive. Singh’s diary, which was smuggled out by friends, offers an intimate account of his life in the prison.
