Translated by Priya Sarukkai Chabria and Ravi Shankar

As a young teenager, the eighth-century Tamil poet Andal is said to have fallen deeply in love with the Hindu deity Vishnu. She soon began writing songs and poems of ardent passion for and unwavering devotion to Vishnu, and eventually declared herself married to him. This translation of her entire corpus attempts to capture the essence of Andal’s fervour. The volume includes the ‘Thiruppavai,’ a song still popular in congregational worship, and the rapturous ‘Nacchiyar Thirumoli.’
