The Bengali filmmaker Ritwik Ghatak is one of the most acclaimed figures in independent Indian cinema. In the late 1940s and 1950s, as a member of the Indian People’s Theatre Association, he wrote five plays focussing on the Bengal Famine and the aftermath of the Partition. These works have been translated into English and made available in a single volume.
