Svetlana Alexievich

Translated by Bela Shayevich

Second-hand Time is the Belarusian journalist Svetlana Alexievich’s first book to appear in English since she won the 2015 Nobel Prize for literature. It features interviews with dozens of people who lived through the collapse of the Soviet Union, including a leader of the Tajik community in Moscow, a manager in an advertising agency, and a son of an army political commissar. In bringing together these voices, Alexievich charts the disappearance of one culture and the emergence of a new one, and illuminates the anger that many continue to feel at the loss of the Soviet Union’s power and status.
